Hello Rosemary Ferguson
Check out our summer campaign model. Darling of the 90s supermodel ‘Brit pack’, Rosemary Ferguson was discovered as a fresh faced 15 year old in McDonalds by fashion photographer, Corrine Day, who she went on to regularly model for alongside fellow muse and friend Kate Moss. Married to polemic artist Jake Chapman, Rosemary’s super-stylish East London wedding was featured in Vogue, for which she has also graced the cover.
SOFAR SOUNDS
What better way to experience the stripped back sound of real music than from the comfort of your own living room? In this case, from the comfort of someone else’s living room…a studio flat in Hackney crammed full of musicians, writers, artists, and fans - all music enthusiasts awaiting an evening quite like no other. There are just two rules at Sofar- you must not talk during the performances, and you must stay for all the music. These are not hard to abide by when you are presented with the enchantingly gentle sound of Emily and The Woods, the haunting harmonies of To Kill a King and the flying hill country blues of Jonny Grave, as well as performances from Willy Mason, Will Knox and one-to-watch Jay Brown. For whoever said the music industry was in trouble, Sofar Sounds is the antidote. Find out more here.

LITERARY SALON 29.03.12
Spring is springing all around: gently nodding snowdrops, a slowly improving economy and a new year of boutique literary salons at Aubin & Wills!
The next Aubin & Wills Salon is Thursday March 29th 7pm-8pmish at Westbourne
Grove with the usual delicious free drinks and the usual delicious free people.
We’ve got two cracking guests: Jonathan Lee and Mark Forsyth (AKA The Inky Fool). What links them both is joy, sort of.
Joy is the central character in JOY but that’s presumably not what she’s feeling as she plummets forty feet to a marble floor while addressing her colleagues in the Square Mile. A witty and shocking exploration of the build-up to and impact of the, er, impact forms the core of Jonathan Lee’s fascinating and insightful novel. Did I mention this will be his VERY FIRST reading from it? Lucky you.
Joy is to be found on just about every page of THE ETYMOLOGICON. The number one bestseller takes us on a quirky journey through the hidden connections between words: why are all Christians cretins? What does shooting pool have to do with chickens? Why is black really white? Some are obvious, most are not and all are enlightening. Mark Forsyth guides us merrily through his maze of words.
Hosted by your Salonierre, Damian Barr. Free as ever and that’s just him.
Where: Aubin & Wills store, 188 Westbourne Grove, W11 2RH. Seating for around 40 and lots of standing room.
When: 7pm till 8ish, Thurs 29th March 2012
BRIGHTON BOOK CLUB
On the last Thursday of every other month our lovely Brighton store staff will be hosting their very own book club. The first will run on Thursday 29th March from 6:30PM-7:30PM, with guests discussing ’ Perfect Lives’ by Polly Samson. If you are in the area and partial to some high-brow literary discussion of an evening, RSVP to brighton@aubinandwills.com.
Damian Barr says of Perfect Lives - “Of course, the lives depicted in these interlinked short stories aren’t perfect at all. But the writing is. Set mostly in and around Brighton we meet a range of curious and often troubled characters.”
Spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Refreshments will be provided.
i-D magazine’s Spring 2012 Royalty Issue is out today. Read their piece on A&W (plus find out how to win 45 tickets to the Aubin Cinema) here.
IT’S HAPPY HOUR AGAIN
For the attention of cocktail-loving Londoners.
Yes, it’s a tube map locating the nearest reputable cocktail bar!
Come the Springtime. And Winter gives way to the burstin’ bulbs of the new year’s sunshine, and with that, the coats turn to jackets and the bicycles roll along the East way to Redchurch Street.
Since I last wrote, I’ve had the first mixes of the new album. Plans are hatching and the train to Bath is booked for supplementary studio sessions, for more vocals and percussion. My songs have taken on another life in that studio on Brassknocker Hill, moonlighting as full band affairs and inspiring me anew.
The first single from ‘North Ten’ is very close to being finished and the first edit of the music video, shot entirely on 16mm, is due. My tour starts in earnest at the end of March and frankly I’m chomping at the bit to get on the tour bus. Check back here shortly for announcements of some in store Aubin & Wills gigs I will be doing!
I gifted myself a new record player and it’s given me cause to root out a lot of my favourite music buried at the bottom of boxes still unpacked from a move two years ago. Currently, the foot’s tappin’ and the head bops to alot of 50’s and 60’s Bluenote and Impulse vinyl including Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner and of course, Mr John Coltrane.
If you’re in London this Sunday I’m playing at The Book Club on Leonard Street. Come down and join in the fun.

Kindness, Gee Up
Kindness aka Adam Bainbridge has fantastic hair and even better bass riffs (just look at that photo and know this promises good things.) Originally released two years ago on Moshi-Moshi, Kindness is back and refreshingly able to laugh at his absence. When your done listening head on over to you tube and watch the video, he’s updated the original with a closing skit featuring plenty of jokes at his and the music industry’s expense; ‘what’s the deal with the song, why is it so short?… I kind of like it though, lo-fi with hi-fi values,’ one music exec says to another, ‘would have been better two years ago though wouldnt it?’

IT TURNED OUT THIS WAY COS YOU DREAMED IT THIS WAY..
The very personal, thought–provoking stream of consciousness on these eye catching billboards which have sprung up under a bridge in Shoreditch was enough to make us stop still (in -3 and a downpour of fresh snow) and read every word. A quick google later, it was revealed as the work of London based artist and Associate Dazed & Confused Publisher Robert Montgomery, whose work pays homage to the influence of the Situationalist manifesto, hijacking advertising spaces across the city and using them to convey ‘hopeful reminders of an environment cluttered with unattainable dreams.’ Intriguing. Montgomery’s work is on display at KK outlet until 25th Feb.

TRACK OF THE WEEK:
Ben Howard, The Wolves
I defy you not to love this dreamscape of a song from 23 year old Folk singer-songwriter, Ben Howard. Hailing from Cornwall, Ben was inspired in his childhood by the likes of Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan, today we can draw comparison to Bon Iver, however without that veil of moody introspection.

A truly influential image–maker, fashion designer Lloyd Johnson helped create the look of rock & roll fashion in Britain from the 60’s onwards, dressing everyone from Iggy Pop to Bob Dylan, via the Beatles , Bowie, Mick Jagger, George Michael and Oasis. Selling out of his boutique Heavy Metal Kids in Kensington Market, and later Johnson’s The Modern Outfitters on the Kings Road, his own designs provided the pop greats with some of their most iconic and dramatic rock & roll looks for over four decades.
Entirely manufactured in the UK, his work featured on the stage, the street, on film and on record sleeves. He was also a visionary of vintage and was buying ‘second hand’ well before the fashion crowd caught on.
The Chelsea College of Art & Design is exhibiting a collection of his work gathered from buyers, store staff, rock & roll stars and collectors, creating a truly one off moment in menswear retailing. Until the 3rd March.
TRACK OF THE WEEK:
The Very Best, Warm Heart of Africa
A couple of months back we joined the Moshi Moshi boys in their East London office to interview them for the Spring Almanac and we left with a huge armful of cds. One band we’re particularly glad to have had bought to our attention is the The Very Best; a multicultural and multitalented trio hailing from Malawi, France and Sweden. Their music is a fantastic fusion of African percussion, jubilant dance and some pop-indie references - this particular number features vocals from Vampire Weekend’s frontman Ezra Koenig. If, like us, you’re discovering The Very Best for the first time (despite Warm Hear of Africa being released two and a half years ago) don’t give yourself a hardtime for not having your finger firmly enough on the pulse… just sit back and enjoy!
