I first became aware of Joe McLaren’s work via his Faber 80th Anniversary cover for Poetry of John Betjeman, poems selected by Hugo Williams, which featured a beautiful collage of a rural landscape that echoed the work of the author perfectly.
This, his latest work, the White’s Pocket Classics re-issue of Lewis Carrol’s classic tale has been executed with great delicacy and is a joy to behold. It is a development of his other projects, displaying his usual mastery of hatching and colour blocking to create illusions of depth and light. The hit of colour - Amaranth Pink is this case - and the contrast bellyband which carries his name, make this book a snip at a price of £6.99. Oh, and not to mention the coloured end papers and black silk page mark - geeky, yes; bothered, no.
