TRACK OF THE WEEK

Breathe Out, Champion

This is a cheeky little ruckus of a tune from our favourite band du jour, Breathe Out. We may be biased (two of the four band members work for Aubin) but we think they are rather good! Champion is their latest single and you can catch them playing it live tomorrow in our Covent Garden store from 7pm. Pop along for some complimentary drinks and a little perusal of the Summer collection. See you there!

TRACK OF THE WEEK:

Jessie Ware, Running

Ok, so it isn’t Orthodox to post two ‘Tracks of the Week’ back to back and in the same week but we just had to share this track. Jessie Ware’s amazing new single ‘Running’  has been playing on repeat in both its remixed and stripped back form; we’ve selected the latter for your delectation. Think slow-mo disco with romance, soul and a bit of a Sade vibe, it oozes class. We later made the fantastic discovery that lovely Jessie used to work with us at our Selfridges concession! We are very, very proud.

Consistently name checked on every ‘100 Best Films’ list, Black Narcisuss is an unsettling adaptation of Rumer Godden’s nuns-in-peril novel loaded with Powell and Pressburger atomsphere and a career best performance from Deborah Kerr.

To be in with a chance of winning, all you need to do is reply @aubinandwills and @aubincinema with an answer to this question ‘Which actor or actress encapsulates Britishness for you and why?’

TRACK OF THE WEEK:

Kindness, Gee Up

Kindness aka Adam Bainbridge has fantastic hair and even better bass riffs (just look at that photo and know this promises good things.) Originally released two years ago on Moshi-Moshi, Kindness is back and refreshingly able to laugh at his absence. When your done listening head on over to you tube and watch the video, he’s updated the original with a closing skit featuring plenty of jokes at his and the music industry’s expense; ‘what’s the deal with the song, why is it so short?… I kind of like it though, lo-fi with hi-fi values,’ one music exec says to another, ‘would have been better two years ago though wouldnt it?’

TRACK OF THE WEEK:

Ben Howard, The Wolves

I defy you not to love this dreamscape of a song from 23 year old Folk singer-songwriter, Ben Howard. Hailing from Cornwall, Ben was inspired in his childhood by the likes of Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan, today we can draw comparison to Bon Iver, however without that veil of moody introspection.

TRACK OF THE WEEK:

The Very Best, Warm Heart of Africa

A couple of months back we joined the Moshi Moshi boys in their East London office to interview them for the Spring Almanac and we left with a huge armful of cds. One band we’re particularly glad to have had bought to our attention is the The Very Best; a multicultural and multitalented trio hailing from Malawi, France and Sweden. Their music is a fantastic fusion of African percussion, jubilant dance and some pop-indie references - this particular number features vocals from Vampire Weekend’s frontman Ezra Koenig. If, like us, you’re discovering The Very Best for the first time (despite Warm Hear of Africa being released two and a half years ago) don’t give yourself a hardtime for not having your finger firmly enough on the pulse… just sit back and enjoy!

TRACK OF THE WEEK:

Gotye (Feat. Kimbra), Somebody That I Used To Know

This will be a song you either love or hate, the heart-wrenched top-notes bemoaning the aftermath of a relationship break-up over a Funny Bones xylophone riff we fully appreciate could be an acquired taste, but that said, here at Aubin HQ we love it. It’s on repeat. This is the first time we’ve come across Belgian-born Australia-based Gotye (pronounced Go-tea-yay) and the rather gorgeous Kimbra. Gotye is currently on tour and will be stopping in at Shepherds Bush, Manchester and Glasgow in February and March.

TRACK OF THE WEEK:

Friends, I’m His Girl

This funk-pop Brooklyn five piece are insanely cool (who isn’t in Brooklyn?) and make undeniably catchy music… what’s not to like? We love this bouncy, up-beat single, the first from their debut album due for release later this year. Already tipped for great things in the BBC’s Sound of 2012, expect to see and hear a lot more from Friends.

AUBIN INTRODUCES:

BLUE ROSE CODE, Whitechapel

A bitter January wind may be blowing outside, but gather round the hearth with this track from Blue Rose Code and escape to a sanctuary of warm, folk vocals. The rich Caledonian notes from singer Ross Wilson roll over clear melodic chords in this piece of winter time reminiscence. His honest sound has drawn acclaim from audiences and critics across the Atlantic and a first album ‘North Ten’ is eagerely anticpated for later this year.

Aubin and Wills is proud to sponsor Blue Rose Code in their year ahead. Keep an eye out here to find out what Ross has to say for himself - he will be blogging for us throughout 2012.

TRACK OF THE WEEK:

Niki & The Doves, The Fox

Eccentric Swedish duo Niki & The Doves drew inspiration for this track from a Scandinavian children’s story in which the main character shares her problems with a fox who takes and buries them in the ground. The song is a haunting combination of a pagan fairytale clashing with an electro-pop chorus.

Also highly recommended from this group is their debut single, DJ ease my mind, which imposes the sharp vocals of Malin Dahlstrôm over a deep sonorous soundscape. With their recent spurt of releases propelling them to 5th place in the BBC Sound of 2012 countdown, Niki & The Dove are definitely ones to watch.
